Sad news to learn about one of our founding board members passing. Mariann Treml was always fun to talk to and a dedicated board member involved with our German Bohemian Monument in New Ulm.
Mariann Treml, age 94, of Comfrey, MN passed away Monday November 21, 2022. She was born on April 30, 1928, to Albert and Elizabeth (Soukup) Goblirsch of Sleepy Eye.
Mariann attended Holy Trinity in New Ulm Grades 1-4 from 1934 to 1938. It was the Great Depression, a time when children were raised strict, and at a time she would write when “children were to be seen, NOT heard!!!” The buses started running in Sleepy Eye, in the Fall of 1938 and Mariann attended St. Mary’s in Sleepy Eye and graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1946.
She married Benjamin Treml on April 19, 1949, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, MN.
Mariann would often write letters in the morning, and as she told others “read, read, read” in the afternoons and evening. Daily the New Ulm Journal, and on Thursday especially when in addition to the New Ulm Journal, others would arrive: the St. James paper, Sleepy Eye paper and Comfrey paper. She was the family historian, being the oldest sibling in her family, she was able to know almost all her aunts and uncles and in doing so, her many cousins.
Mariann would often travel throughout Minnesota to visit her sons and daughters and their children. During her life she took nearly a dozen trips to Europe to visit German Bohemian historical and family sites and other places of interest.
Mariann was a founding Board Member of the German-Bohemian Heritage Society and was part of the early planning and eventual dedication of the German-Bohemian Immigrant Monument located in the city of New Ulm.
Mariann is survived by her children, Jeanne (Larry) Elg, Marilyn (Alan) Stokes, and Roger Treml; nine grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Ben Treml in 1975; her daughter Thecla in 1957; sons: Neil in 1995, Alan in 2009, and Bruce in 2022.
