History of the German Bohemians Heritage and Culture in the Crownlands
Many Minnesotans have German ancestors from domains of the Austrian Empire, and many have a branch of the family tree from Bohemia, an ancient kingdom whose lands make up Czechia today.
At 1:00 pm, Wade Olsen, GBHS president, will present a free slideshow. Learn what it was like for German Bohemians living in Bohemia before immigrating to new lands. We will cover snapshots of Bohemian history as part of the Austrian Empire and its relationship with Germany today. Included is a special look at some of the ancient architecture and archaeological dig at a parish church dating from 1356. Peek at their lives and learn about their homes, families, work, spiritual life, customs, and culture.
We will review village life as seen through recent travels in the homeland showing many photos of what is seen there today and compared to photos and information from former times. Enjoy entertaining stories and unexpected connections while learning about this scenic, cultural region of Central Europe with its exciting layers of history!
