Secretive, forced relocation of a German-Ecuadorian Family in World War II
Presented by Dr. Kimberly Contag
In 1942 the U.S. used the secretive Enemy Control Act to round up, detain and deport thousands of people of German, Italian and Japanese heritage in Mexico, Central and South America. These people were labeled “enemy aliens” and “bargain nationals” and were sent to Nazi Germany, Hirohito’s Japan, or Mussolini’s Italy. Dr. Contag will take you on the heartbreaking and heartwarming journey of one German-Ecuadorian widower and his four young children who were displaced by this secretive U.S. government act. The photo journey will take you from the streets of Quito, Ecuador to an internment camp in the U.S., to homestays and an orphanage in Germany, to a refugee and repatriation camp in France and, for those who survive, back to the displaced family’s homeland in Ecuador. Join us for an interesting story and learn how this family ended up in New Ulm.
